Relaxation Dentistry

If you have difficulty sitting in the treatment chair, we can help you feel at ease. Apart from Dr. Graham's great chairside manner and gentle touch, we also offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation as a solution to dental anxiety.

Nitrous oxide sedation, also known as "laughing gas," is commonly used to make treatment more comfortable and great for patients that feel anxious in the dental chair. Nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask and produces a state of relaxation throughout treatment. Once treatment is over, the nitrous oxide quickly leaves the system, which means a short recovery time!

Oral sedation works by taking a pill or liquid at a set time before treatment. The drug produces a calming effect to make the visit to our office a much less stressful experience. Patients under oral sedation will have little or no memory of their procedure following treatment. Oral sedation is simple, safe and has very few side effects.

If you have any questions about our sedation options please don't hesitate to ask.

Frequently Asked Questions About Relaxation Dentistry

Is relaxation dentistry safe?

Yes, when administered by trained professionals like our team at Lake Park Dental, relaxation dentistry is very safe. We closely monitor patients throughout their treatment.

Will I be completely unconscious during my treatment?

With the forms of relaxation dentistry we offer (nitrous oxide and oral sedation), you'll remain conscious but in a deeply relaxed state. General anesthesia, which renders you unconscious, is typically only used for complex surgical procedures and is not offered in our office.

How long do the effects of sedation last?

Nitrous oxide effects wear off within minutes of removing the mask. Oral sedation effects can last several hours, which is why you'll need someone to drive you home after your appointment.

Can I eat before my appointment if I'm having sedation?

For nitrous oxide, you can eat a light meal a few hours before. For oral sedation, we'll provide specific instructions, but typically you'll need to fast for several hours before your appointment.

Will my insurance cover relaxation dentistry?

Coverage varies by insurance plan. Some plans may cover it if it's deemed medically necessary. We can help you understand your coverage and discuss payment options.
