Extractions

There are times when it is necessary to remove a tooth. A baby tooth may need removal if it has misshapen or long roots that prevent it from falling out as it should, blocking the way for permanent teeth. A permanent tooth may need to be removed if it has so much decay that it puts the surrounding teeth at risk of decay. Infection, orthodontic correction, or problems with a wisdom tooth can also require removal of a tooth.

When it is determined that a tooth needs to be removed, Dr. Graham may extract the tooth during a regular checkup or may request another visit for this procedure. Once a tooth has been removed, if it is a permanent tooth, neighboring teeth may shift, causing problems with chewing or with your jaw joint function. To avoid these complications, Dr. Graham may recommend that you replace the extracted tooth.

If you believe that you have a tooth that needs to be removed, please don't hesitate to call! Together we will discuss the best option for you.

For visible teeth, we perform simple extractions:

Surgical Extractions

For impacted teeth or those below the gum line:

  • We may use both local anesthesia and conscious sedation
  • An incision is made in the gum to access the tooth

Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extraction

Is tooth extraction painful?

We use local anesthesia to ensure you don't feel pain during the procedure. You may feel pressure, but it shouldn't be painful. We also offer sedation options for anxious patients.

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

Most patients feel back to normal within a few days to a week. Complete healing of the socket takes about 1-2 weeks for simple extractions and 3-4 weeks for surgical extractions.

What can I eat after a tooth extraction?

Start with soft foods like yogurt, pudding, and smoothies. Gradually introduce solid foods as you feel comfortable. Avoid hot foods and beverages for the first 24 hours.

When can I brush my teeth after an extraction?

You can brush your teeth the night of the extraction, but avoid the extraction site. Be gentle and avoid the extraction area for a few days.

Will I need to replace the extracted tooth?

Unless it's a wisdom tooth, we generally recommend replacing extracted teeth to maintain proper bite function and prevent shifting of other teeth. We'll discuss replacement options with you.
